Dear Friend,
We all know the story of Gideon, the cowering farmer who became a mighty man of God.
But what about the 300 men who followed Gideon into battle? There weren’t 300 to begin with. 32,000 men actually answered the initial call to battle. 32,000 men was almost enough to make an army – not a big one, not when facing the 450,000 Midianites – but an army nonetheless.
But God doesn’t need an army, no matter how big or small. He uses people through whom His light shines. He uses people who are instruments of hope. So 31,700 men were sent home.
That left 300. They surrounded the army of the Midianites – an army so vast even the camels couldn’t be counted. To surround an army that size they were so spread out they must have each felt they were alone. But they were not. They were simply strategically placed. And in the middle of the night, in the deepest darkness, when the signal was given, they broke the jars with which they had covered their lanterns, and the camp of the Midianites was blazing in light.
That’s the wonder of the way God works. He conquers not through confrontations, not with a sword, not through battle, not with vast armies, not with demonstrations of might or power. He simply shines His light into the darkness. He points to an empty tomb. He raises the flag of hope.
And it’s still the way God works. God is at work in our world, right now, bringing hope and shining light, and He does it through people like you.
